3D Technology as Demonstrative Evidence

Wednesday, March 23, 2016

2:00 PM – 3:30 PM EST

Speakers:

Bill Daley, P.E., Senior Mechanical Engineer, CED Technologies Inc., Annapolis, MD
Edward J. McGinn, Jr., Esq., Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin, King of Prussia, PA

Overview:

Most engineering experts are technology guru's and understand contemporary tools that can be utilized in claims and litigation to create powerful demonstrative evidence. 3D Scanning represents a quantum leap in measurement methods and technology. A 3D laser scanner is a device that analyses a real-world object or environment and converts this target into a collection of data. This data can then be used to construct a three-dimensional model that has a variety of uses. One such use is 3D printing. A 3D printer can quickly and cost effectively create scalable models that can be used for courtroom exhibits.

This presentation will introduce attendees to 3D laser scanning and 3D printing technologies, explain how they work, give practical applications reliably used today as well as vivid examples of some of their uses. Attendees will leave with a good understanding of the technology, its application as it applies to their specific professional efforts, cost and accessibility.

After investigating and reconstructing accidents for over 25 years, CED Technologies has built up a large database of liability expert opinions, reports, and depositions. Many lessons have been learned and there is a clear trend on what has been successful in legal suits. A forensic engineering expert attempts to uncover all contributing factors that cause accidents. Having the ability to cost effectively create demonstrative evidence can help the engineer to arrive at the most accurate opinions.

Obviously, engineering experts have their own perspective on how demonstrative evidence can and should be utilized for courtroom demonstration. The legal aspects and perspective of the introduction of 3D scans and 3D prints will also be discussed in the presentation.
